“Green Climate Fund (GCF) is a global platform that responds to climate change by investing in low-emission and climate-resilient development. GCF was established by 194 governments to limit or reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in developing countries, and to help vulnerable societies adapt to the unavoidable impacts of climate change”.  

The challenge – hiring 21 positions for the new Green Climate Fund 

Soon after it was established in 2013, the Green Climate Fund (GCF) contracted SRI Executive to recruit 21 positions ranging from the Executive Director and senior management level to technical delivery teams. They included the following roles: 

1. Executive Director 
2. Advisor to the Executive Director 
3. Chief Financial Officer 
4. General Counsel 
5. Country Climate Change Economist 
6. Mitigation and Adaptation Director 
7. Private Sector Facility Director 
8. External Affairs Director 
9. Country Programming Director 
10. Information Communications Technology  Manager 
11. Coordinator of Mitigation 
12. Human Resources Specialist 
13. Accredited Entities Specialist 
14. Private Sector Specialist - Financial Institutes 
15. Resource Mobilisation Specialist 
16. Communications and Outreach Specialist 
17. Private Sector Specialist - Project Finance 
18. Monitoring and Evaluation Specialist 
19. Procurement Specialist 
20. Human Resources Officer 
21. Financial Management Officer 

Our strategy – forward planning and risk mitigation 

SRI Executive planned the recruitment process across a number of phases to ensure that sufficient time and focus was dedicated to each role. We began the process by developing a detailed project management plan which identified milestones, deliverables and future risks including coordinating interview schedules, working across multiple time zones and the limited availability of the hiring managers. It was important for SRI Executive to understand all potential challenges at the start of the recruitment process. For example, a key challenge that we navigated was the limited number of staff employed at the Fund who were available to support the hiring process.  

Our results – a successful recruitment process leading to further multiple hire projects 

SRI Executive mitigated all challenges, and 21 candidates were successfully appointed at the Fund. The recruitment process was completed in just over six months, within budget and on time. Our well-developed and robust process has been subsequently used with the GCF for further multiple hire projects as the Fund has continued to grow. Shortly after this process, we partnered with the Fund to recruit an additional 14 positions.
